Size Guide

Self Storage companies generally have a wide range of room shapes and sizes. Most work in Imperial and calculate your space in Square feet (we will convert this to m2 below). This is the floor space and most Self Storage rooms will be at least 8 feet in height (2.5m). The sizes available go from as little as 10sqft (2ft6 inches x 4ft) to 10,000sqft however for Household customers they rarely require above 300sqft unless you own a mansion. The room sizes go up from 10sqft in 5 ft increments e.g. 15sqft, 20sqft, 25sqft and so on.

Many Self Storage company websites can offer all sorts of complicated ways of telling you how much space you need.  From 3D images of Self Storage rooms, adding items of furniture as you go, or listing your items and then they recommend the size you need. The Space Calculator which many Self Storage providers have on their websites are notoriously inaccurate.

For the vast majority of Storage needs the sizes below will give you a good idea of how much space you need. If you are a hoarder go to the top end if you throw things away regularly go to the bottom end.

Most Self Storage companies in the UK will offer the following room sizes

  • 25 sq. ft (2.32m2)
  • 50 sq. ft (4.64m2)
  • 75 sq. ft (6.96m2)
  • 100 sq. ft (9.29sq m)
  • 150 sq. ft (13.93 sq m)
  • 200 sq. ft (18.58sq m)

Here are 2 simple ways of estimating what size of Self Storage room you need:

Room Size Range Equivalent Property Size
16sqft (1.48m2) -25sqft (2.32m2) Personal Items only (No Furniture)
50sqft (4.64m2) – 75sqft (6.96m2) Studio Flat – One bedroom Flat
75sqft (6.96m2) – 100sqft (9.29m2) 2 Bedroom House/Flat
100sqft (9.29m2) -150sqft (13.93 m2) 3 Bedroom House/Flat
150sqft(13.93 m2) – 200sqft (18.58m2) 4 Bedroom House/Flat
200sqft(18.58m2) – 300sqft (27.87m2) 5 Bedroom House/Flat
Room Size Range Equivalent Size
16sqft (1.48m2) -25sqft (2.32m2) Contents of a Large Cupboard
50sqft (4.64m2) – 75sqft (6.96m2) Contents of a full Transit Van
75sqft (6.96m2) – 100sqft (9.29m2) Contents of a full Luton/Box Van
100sqft (9.29m2) -150sqft (13.93 m2) Contents of a Single Garage.
150sqft(13.93m2) – 200sqft (18.58m2) Contents of a 7.5tonne Truck
200sqft(18.58m2) – 300sqft (27.87m2) Contents of a Double Garage

The above is meant as a guide only and one person’s 3 bedroom house can be very different from another person’s 3 bedroom house. The Self Storage Supermarket would advise you to get your quotes for the size you think is right then contact the company you want to use and confirm the size with them.  If you still have doubts pop down to your local Self Storage provider to have a look at the Self Storage rooms.

Container Storage Sizes

Most container storage companies use converted shipping containers which come in standard sizes which are 160sqft (14.86m2) which is 8ft x 20ft and 320sqft (29.73m2) which is 8ft by 40ft.

This is the traditional sizes however you can now get them in smaller sizes which are the same as the Self Storage sizes above.

Mobile Storage Sizes & Removal Company Storage

Mobile Self Storage uses the same concept as removal company storage so most mobile storage and Removal company storage companies use crates/containers which are 35sqft (3.25m2). These do not have the height of Self Storage rooms and are usually 7 ft in height. Remember it is likely that you will need several of these for a house move.
